Charlotte's bulky item pickup is great for a couch or an old washer. It isn't built for a remodel or a whole-house cleanout. Here's how the City's service works and when a dumpster is the better call.

The short answer: use Charlotte's bulky item pickup for a few household items like furniture, mattresses and appliances. Rent a dumpster when you have renovation debris, a whole room or house to clear, or more than you want to schedule piece by piece.
How Charlotte bulky item pickup works
- Schedule first. Call 311 at 704-336-7600, use the CLT+ app, or request online. Items set out without a scheduled pickup won't be collected.
- City customers only. You must currently receive City of Charlotte garbage collection.
- What it takes: household furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment and similar items too big for the cart.
- Set-out rules: no sooner than the day before and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day, with 3 feet between items. Empty appliances and remove their doors.
- Changes: call 311 by noon the business day before your pickup to cancel or reschedule.

- You're clearing a whole house, garage or estate and don't want to schedule items piece by piece.
- You have yard debris beyond the City's limits, like large limbs or stumps.
- You want everything gone at once instead of waiting on a collection day.
