Two dumpster quotes can look $100 apart and end up costing the same, or the other way around. Use this checklist to compare the total for your project, not just the headline price.

The short answer: before you compare prices, make sure every quote covers the same things: size, delivery and pickup, days, tons included, the overage rate, fuel or distance charges and item fees. The cheapest headline price isn't always the cheapest dumpster.

Work out the total for your job
Add up what you'll actually pay: base price, plus any fuel or distance charge, plus expected overage, plus any extra days. For example, a Snappy 20-yard delivered 12 miles from our Monroe yard is $450 plus $24 in fuel surcharge, or $474, with 2 tons and 7 days included. If your debris is heavy, add $95 for each ton over 2.
- Be honest about the debris. Shingles, tile, concrete and dirt use up the weight allowance fast. Light household junk rarely does.
- Match the days to the job. A weekend cleanout and a month-long remodel need different rental periods.
- Ask about delivery timing. A lower price doesn't help if the dumpster shows up after your crew does.

What should be included in a dumpster rental quote?
At minimum: the dumpster size, delivery and pickup, how many days are included, how much weight is included, the price per ton over that allowance, the price per extra day, any fuel or distance charge, and fees for specific items like tires or mattresses.
Why do dumpster prices vary so much?
Quotes often include different things. One company's price may include 2 tons and 7 days, while another's lower price includes less weight, fewer days, or leaves out delivery, fuel or disposal. Compare the total for your project, not the headline price.
How much weight do I need?
It depends on the debris. Household junk is light; shingles, tile, concrete, brick and dirt are heavy. Tell the company what you're throwing away and ask how many tons they expect, so the weight allowance fits the job.
