The short answer: a Bagster can make sense for a very small job, around 3 cubic yards of light debris. For anything bigger, or anything heavy like concrete, dirt or shingles, a roll-off dumpster usually costs less per yard, holds far more and comes with a set price up front.

A Bagster is a heavy-duty dumpster bag sold by WM (Waste Management). You buy the bag at a home improvement store, fill it yourself, then schedule and pay for a collection; a crane truck lifts it out. A roll-off dumpster is delivered to your driveway, you fill it, and it's hauled away, all for one flat price that includes delivery, pickup, a weight allowance and a rental period.

Which costs less?

The bag itself is cheap, which is why a Bagster looks like the budget option. The real cost is the collection fee, which WM sets by ZIP code and you pay when you schedule pickup. National pricing guides put the all-in cost of one Bagster at roughly $180 to $380. Check thebagster.com with your ZIP code for the exact collection price.

Cost per cubic yard

At $180 to $380 for 3 cubic yards, a Bagster works out to about $60 to $127 per yard. Snappy's 10-yard is $37.50 per yard, and the 20-yard is $22.50 per yard.

The two-bag rule

If your project would fill two Bagsters, a 10-yard dumpster usually costs about the same or less and holds more than three bags' worth.

When a Bagster makes sense

  • Your whole project is about 3 cubic yards or less, roughly one heaped full-size pickup truck bed.
  • The debris is light: a few pieces of furniture, carpet, a small closet or attic cleanout.
  • You want to fill it slowly over several weeks with no rental clock.
  • You have a spot on your property close to the street with clearance on all sides and overhead.

When a dumpster is the better choice

  • The project is more than about 3 cubic yards: kitchen or bath remodels, garage or whole-house cleanouts, moves and estate cleanouts.
  • You have heavy debris. A Bagster takes only 1 cubic yard of concrete, dirt, brick or sod; a 10-yard dumpster is built for it.
  • You're tearing off a roof. Shingles are heavy and add up fast; see our roofing dumpsters.
  • You want a known price before you start, with delivery, pickup and weight included.
  • You need it gone on your schedule, not within a multi-day collection window.
  • You'd rather walk debris in through rear doors than lift everything over the side of a bag.

How much is 3 cubic yards?

Three cubic yards is about one heaped full-size pickup truck bed. It fills up faster than most people expect: a single room of carpet and pad, a small bathroom demo or a few pieces of furniture can do it. A Snappy 10-yard holds more than three Bagsters, and a 20-yard, our most popular size, holds more than six.

Bagster vs. dumpster FAQs

Is a Bagster cheaper than a dumpster?

For a very small job, sometimes. A Bagster bag costs about $30, but the separate collection fee varies by ZIP code, and national pricing guides put the all-in cost at roughly $180 to $380 for 3 cubic yards. Snappy's 10-yard dumpster is $375 flat for 10 cubic yards with delivery, pickup, 1 ton and 7 days included, so it usually costs less per yard.

How much does a Bagster cost in Charlotte or Union County?

The bag is about $30 at home improvement stores. WM sets the collection fee by ZIP code, so enter your ZIP at thebagster.com for the exact price. Compare that total with Snappy's flat $375 for a 10-yard dumpster.

Can you put concrete or dirt in a Bagster?

Only up to 1 cubic yard of heavy debris such as concrete, dirt, brick, rock or sod. WM won't collect a bag loaded with more. A roll-off dumpster can take much more heavy debris, up to a 6-ton maximum, with 1 ton included in the 10-yard price and $95 per ton after that.

How long does Bagster pickup take?

WM says collection typically happens within 5 business days of the date you choose as ready, Monday through Friday.

What size dumpster replaces a Bagster?

A 10-yard dumpster holds more than three Bagsters' worth of debris. For most remodels and cleanouts, the 20-yard is the most popular choice.

Can a Bagster go on the street?

No. WM requires the bag to sit on your property, not on a sidewalk, street or other public property, with its center within 16 feet of the street, alley or driveway edge.

Will a dumpster damage my driveway?

Usually not when it's placed carefully and loaded evenly. Boards under the rails are available on request. See will a dumpster damage my driveway?
