Dumpster weight by size: what our customers actually load

Most "how much does a dumpster weigh" answers are guesses. These come from the landfill scale tickets on our own rentals in Monroe, Charlotte and Union County.

Size Price & weight included Typical load in 2026 What that means
10 yard $375, 1 ton (2,000 lbs) 1.27 tons (middle half: 0.80 to 2.90 tons) 6 in 10 loads went over 1 ton, because people use the 10 for heavy jobs like concrete, dirt and shingles.
15 yard $425, 1.5 tons (3,000 lbs) 0.87 tons Most loads finish well under the allowance. Good for cleanouts and bulky, lighter debris.
20 yard $450, 2 tons (4,000 lbs) 1.61 tons The typical remodel or cleanout fits inside 2 tons with room to spare.
30 yard $650, 3 tons (6,000 lbs) 2.64 tons (middle half: 2.06 to 3.30 tons) 68% of loads stayed within 3 tons. About 1 in 10 went past 3.8 tons.

Typical load is the median: half of rentals weighed less, half weighed more. Source: Snappy Dumpster Rental landfill scale tickets, January to September 2026 (97 ten-yard and 106 thirty-yard rentals).

How much does an empty dumpster weigh?

A steel roll-off container weighs a ton or more on its own, and the bigger sizes weigh more. You never pay for that. The landfill weighs the truck on the way in and on the way out, and you are billed only for the debris inside.

What matters for your bill is the weight of your load compared with the allowance included in your price: 1 ton in a 10-yard, 1.5 tons in a 15-yard, 2 tons in a 20-yard and 3 tons in a 30-yard.

How much does debris weigh? Heavy vs. light materials

Volume and weight are different things. A box can be half full and already over its weight allowance if the material is dense. These are rough industry figures, not guarantees.

Very heavy

Concrete, brick, block, dirt, gravel and rock weigh well over a ton per cubic yard. A 10-yard filled only partway can pass 2 tons. Use the 10-yard and load it partway. See heavy debris dumpsters.

Heavy

Roofing shingles run about 250 to 400 lbs per roofing square (100 sq ft), so a full roof tear-off can weigh 2 to 4 tons. Wet drywall, plaster and tile are heavy too. See roofing dumpsters.

Light to medium

Furniture, household junk, cabinets, flooring, lumber and dry yard waste are bulky but light. These loads usually fill the box before they reach the weight allowance, so pick the size by volume.

How to stay under your weight allowance

  • Pick the size by what you are throwing away, not just how much. Heavy material goes in a 10-yard, bulky material in a 15, 20 or 30.
  • Keep heavy debris low and spread out, and do not load concrete, dirt or brick past the halfway mark.
  • Cover the dumpster before rain. Wet drywall, carpet and yard waste weigh more.
  • Not sure? Text a photo of the job to 704-690-4445 and we will tell you which size keeps you under the allowance.

If you go over, it is $95 per ton, billed to the hundredth of a ton. A typical 10-yard load of 1.27 tons is 0.27 tons over, or about $26 extra. There are no other weight fees.

A steel roll-off container weighs a ton or more empty. You are never charged for it. The landfill weighs the truck in and out, and you pay only for the debris you loaded.

What happens if my dumpster is overweight?

You pay $95 per ton over the included weight, billed to the hundredth of a ton. For example, 0.27 tons over is about $26. We do not add other overweight fees.
